Q: How did you get into Christian radio? When? Why?
A: Two adults during my formative years significantly influenced me by their lives to consider the power of radio. My dad was born-again at the age of 9 while listening to M.R. DeHaan of the Radio Bible Class give an invitation to accept Christ over the radio. Mel Johnson, my mother's brother, helped start Children's Bible Hour in the 40's, began a radio ministry of his own known as Tips for Teens and Action 4, and has been a mentor ever since. I graduated from Moody Bible Institute in the early 70's as a broadcaster and began a 33 year journey among stations, ministries, and ad agencies from the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest to the Southwest.
Q: When did you join KCRN?
A: December of 1997
Q: Tell us about your family.
A: Rachel and I met following college at our church in Grand Rapids, Michigan and married in 1977. On our wedding day, we broke tradition and sat down to a leisurely breakfast at Micky D's. We have been free spirits ever since, going where God sends us, nurturing an inquisitive spirit. Our oldest son, Andy, is a graduate of Angelo State University and is working in the corporate office of a major food store chain in Michigan. Andy married Annie in Grand Rapids in September of 2010. Our younger son Joe, has his masters in athletic administration from the University of Wisconsin/LaCrosse. Joe married Kelly in 2006 in London, Ontario, Canada.
Q: What do you like best about being a part of this ministry, or what has been your biggest challenge in your role here?
A: Looking back over many years of service to communities from Western Michigan to Fargo, North Dakota, to Western Washington to West Texas - giving leadership to KCRN AM & FM has been my most significant challenge to date. Taking KCRN from that of a repeater of our Dallas sister station, KCBI, to a fully functioning local station with staff and services to the Concho Valley has literally meant giving this station back to the people! We're not just a provider of programming but a living, breathing organism that plays a vital role in this community. KCRN is a community--supported Christian radio station that serves the purpose of providing clear Biblical teaching and great music 24/7...and fulfills the role of that of a giant connector/network for God's kingdom here in the Concho Valley.
Q: What verse or motivational statement guides your life?
A: God is previous. My responsibility is to come up to speed with what He is doing and find my place. As a leader, I give attention more to my heart than any given style. It's uncanny, but every day I know what I'm to do, even though others may not... because I am listening to God for myself. Love God. Love Others. Let's get on with it!
